Real Madrid is the reigning champion of the Spanish League (called “La Liga”), having tallied exactly 100 points in becoming the first Spanish club to reach that total. Since its founding in 1902, Real Madrid has won a La Liga-record 32 domestic titles and 18 Spanish Cups. “Los Blancos,” as Real Madrid is known for its white home uniforms, are managed by Jose Mourinho, who has now won domestic championships in four different countries. On the field, the team is led by arguably the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 60 goals in 55 matches in all competitions in the recently completed season.

A.C. Milan was founded in 1899 and is an 18-time champion and 17-time runner up in the Italian League (called “Serie A”). Known around the world as the “Rossoneri,” a nod in Italian to their red and black vertically striped uniforms, the club finished second in Serie A in 2011-12 following their championship the previous season. In their history, A.C. Milan has won five Italian Cups and two European Cup Winners’ Cups. They are led by striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who topped Serie A with 28 goals.

The current Yankee Stadium carries on the great soccer tradition of the original Yankee Stadium, which hosted some of the most famous teams in world soccer, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, Juventus, Napoli, Celtic, Benfica and Sparta Prague, along with the national teams of England, Israel, Italy and the United States. Pele, who many consider the greatest player of all time, called Yankee Stadium home in 1976, when he played for the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League.

Both clubs appearing in the August 8 match previously played at the original Yankee Stadium. Real Madrid defeated the New York Generals of the National Professional Soccer League, 4-1, on August 21, 1968, and A.C. Milan won both of its matches, defeating Panathinaikos, 4-0, on June 27, 1969, as well as arch-rival Inter Milan, 6-4, just two days later.

The matches between Chelsea FC and Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid and A.C. Milan, are part of the World Football Challenge, which is taking place throughout North America from July 18 through August 11.
